PROJECT 1 : ME, MYSELF & I

PROJECT 1A: STEWARDSHIP

The task is to sketch my own self-portrait using pencils as the medium. Some descriptions are also written about myself based on my personal background, how I see myself in five years later and as the contributions for the betterment of built environment which I can give as a quantity surveyor.

PERSONAL DETAIL
My name is Nor Aqliah Binti Ismail. On September 10th 1991, I was born at Kangar General Hospital. Nine days before I turned 22, I had safely registered as a first year student in Universiti Sains Malaysia to pursue my study in Bachelor of Housing, Building & Planning (Quantity Surveying) and will be continuing the 3-year-journey until I graduate in full spirit.
My beloved parents are Tuan Haji Ismail Bin Kasbona & Puan Rosma Binti Bakar. My father is an assistant agriculture officer of the Muda Agricultural and Development Authority (MADA) while my mother is a great housewife.
In my family, I am the fourth of six children. I have a married elder brother and two elder sisters whom three of them had already graduated and are working in their own field of expertise. My elder brother is a computer programmer & IT developer while my elder sisters are working for the USM publisher and as an assistant medical officer in IIUM.  Besides, I also have a younger sister and a younger brother whom both of them are studying in secondary school.
I had had my primary education in S. K. Arau, Perlis and secondary education in S.M.Sultan Abdul Halim, Jitra, Kedah in technical science stream. After that I had sat for A-level in International Education College (INTEC), Shah Alam in 2011.
I have a very deep interest to built environment since the age of five years old and therefore, in the future i would like to be someone whom plays a role in the field. During my free time, I love to do hobbies which require the use of hands & tools such as sewing, making handicrafts, decorating spaces, tidying, doing calculations & others. Besides, I also love to read to gain knowledge, information & pleasure.

FIVE YEARS LATER
Five years in the future, I will be a registered quantity surveyor working with a construction firm in Malaysia, after having my two-year-professional working experience and after fulfilling all the requirements needed to be eligible to register with the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM). With the practices, I could see myself had become an excellent and competent quantity surveyor whom is in high spirit to be a part of any well known firm, corporate body or organization. At the meantime, I am fully motivated to gather experience in various projects and scale of construction in Malaysia and maybe I will be interested to find out any job opportunities in the other countries. While developing my career as a quantity surveyor, I would like to look forward to continue my study in master in quantity surveying so that I can step to a higher level in my field of expertise. Apart from my career in built environment, I also had managed to run my own boutique so in the next few years I also will be a successful businesswoman with my own expanding company.

FOR BETTER BUILT ENVIRONMENT
Nowadays our built environment is more challenging due to the advancement and dynamic development in our country. Development projects are done widely but all of them must adhere to the rules and regulations in order to maintain the sustainability in our built environment. The quantity surveyors are not excluded in playing a major role and giving contribution for the betterment of the built environment. As one of them, I will be an efficient and effective consultant throughout all the stages of construction from the pre-design stage, design stage, construction stage and post-construction stage. I will need to gain thorough knowledge and experiences in built environment in order to apply them in the projects. As a quantity surveyor is the most responsible actor in the aspect of economy and financial in built environment, I have to be visible and contribute to affect the most cost effective design. The historical role of the quantity surveyor included functions like measurement, quantification and preparation of bills of quantities, preparation of contract documents, cost planning, cost control, procurement advice and contract administration. With the advancement of technology, the role now needed to include new attributions like auditing, facilitating, leading and managing of the development process. This change in the industry brought that a quantity surveyor moved from being seen as a number crunchers to a facilitator, an estimator to a cost manager, a brick counter to a value manager, over technical to a peoples person, an old hat to an innovative person or profession and boring to being dynamic. (Moss J. 2004). With these innovations a quantity surveyor will surely contribute for the betterment of built environment.
